Title: Harmonizing Commitments: Youth Action, Climate Agendas, and the Kigali Amendment

Description: This side event will spotlight the pivotal role of youth in driving climate action and aligning it with the objectives of the Kigali Amendment. We aim to brainstorm youth interventions, innovative solutions, and successful advocacy efforts that promote ozone protection and climate goals synergistically. By fostering meaningful dialogues between young leaders, policymakers, and environmental experts, we intend to catalyze collaborative efforts that will inspire actionable commitments towards a sustainable, ozone-protected, and climate-resilient future. This side event will not only amplify youth voices but also provide a compelling platform for intergenerational actions, cross-sectoral cooperation, ultimately strengthening global environmental commitments.

Harnessing the potential of young people is critical to the long-term viability of environmental initiatives such as the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment. We can tap into the inventive thinking and passion for a sustainable future by empowering youth via education and involvement. Encouraging their participation in research, lobbying, and policy development ensures new viewpoints and unwavering dedication. Young leaders are leading the transition to environmentally friendly technology and practices, thereby protecting the ozone layer and minimizing climate change. Their passion and inventiveness will be critical in creating a cleaner, greener planet for future generations.

Aligning climate and ozone policy targets enhances efficiency, as actions to reduce ozone-depleting substances often coincide with those curbing greenhouse gases, yielding cost savings, and accelerating global environmental protection. Enhancing youth participation in implementing the Montreal Protocol and Kigali Amendment fosters innovative solutions, bridges the science-policy gap, and empowers communities for effective local change.

Unexpected HFC-23 Emissions: New Science & Sources
Time Description Venue Documents
13:00 - 15:00
Organizer: Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development (IGSD)

Title: Unexpected HFC-23 Emissions: New Science & Sources

Description: Parties to the Montreal Protocol have raised concerns about unexpected increases in HFC-23 emissions that have been confirmed by atmospheric measurements. This panel brings together experts for a panel discussion about known and new possible sources of HFC-23 emissions, such as HFC-23 from feedstock production, increasing use of HFC-23 in fire suppression, and HFC-23 from breakdown of components in some new refrigerant alternatives. The discussion will focus on ways to mitigate these emissions.
